Bentley Mills is actively seeking and engaging in solutions to climate change that not only reduce our impact but also puts us on a path to be restorative to people and planet. We are committed to addressing the intersection of climate change, economic and social inequities, and aligning with partners who understand and value this approach.
Bentley has been manufacturing 100% PVC Free carpet for over 4 decades. Manufactured in the world’s first LEED EB OM Gold carpet manufacturing facility building, all of the carpet we make is 100% PVC Free and LBC Red List Free, with sustainability certifications such as Cradle to Cradle, NSF 140, and Green Label Plus. Bentley Mills does not use perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) substances in the manufacture of our carpet products. Further, Bentley Mills does not apply any topical treatments that can be harmful to people and the planet.
Manufacturing in California challenges us in ways that suppliers based in other states can’t imagine. But that’s what makes us better, and we’re continuously improving our processes to exceed California regulations. During the last seven years, we have reduced our consumption of electricity by 34%, natural gas by 53%, and water by 68%, all while doubling our revenue and output.
In 2010 we joined the Better Plants Program, sponsored by the US Department of Energy with a goal to reduce our energy consumption by 25% in 10 years.
Four years later, we had met that goal and in 2015 redoubled our commitment to energy reduction by joining the Better Plants Challenge.
In 2022 we joined the US DOE’s Better Climate Challenge to mitigate the impacts of climate change through total carbon reduction.
In 2023, we pledged our commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), aligning ourselves with the goals set forth in the Paris Agreement. Widely recognized as a trusted framework for setting climate reduction goals, SBTi provides a rigorous and science-based approach to help companies set their emissions reduction targets to limit global warming.
We continue to strive to improve by introducing renewable energy, bio-based material, and enhanced recycled content. Each project is designed to avoid chemicals of concern and reduce our carbon footprint, while striving to be a good partner to those most negatively impacted by emissions. After our hard work is complete, any remaining unabated carbon is offset by a third-party partner to insure we maintain technical integrity and full transparency.
But we believe that being a sustainable company and being truly committed to protecting and restoring our planet goes far beyond action around carbon. Bentley’s commitment to social equity is demonstrated by a long history of community outreach programs that serve marginalized and underserved communities because we know that vulnerable populations are more at-risk from a changing climate.
That’s why we expanded our portfolio of carbon offset investments to include targeted social impact-based projects such as clean water and cooking solutions, gender equity programs, sustainable infrastructure, and other health and livelihood strategies.
Additionally, our carbon offset investment portfolio will continue to include natural climate solutions such as forest and grassland restoration and also technological programs that advance renewable energy and improve waste management. All programs are evaluated and verified by a credible third party for quality and transparency.
